What I Ate Today #8

Good morning, all you beautiful Internet people out there. My bedhead and I think there’s a little bit less of us today than there was yesterday.

Breakfast

Because I had the hydrotherapy class at 8am, I had to hurry this morning. I had planned to have an egg and veggies on toast, but remembered I had the other half of that frittata in the freezer. So I tossed it in the microwave to see how it would work out. It was quick and easy, that’s for sure. And it was, you know, technically food. But it wasn’t very pleasant to eat. The potatoes were dry and floury and the egg was rubbery and soggy. The Internet tells me I should’ve let it thaw overnight in the fridge, rather than nuking it from frozen. I might give that a shot, because I’m definitely not giving up on frittatas yet. But this experience is exactly why I’ve never been a fan of freezing them (or brekky slices, or egg muffins, or anything similar).

And here’s me really mixing it up. Poolhead instead of bedhead, and I’m trying another one of those fancy instant coffees. And I thought I’d try sitting outside for a while, but it’s 4° C(39° F) and overcast, so I didn’t last very long. My verdict on the coffee is that it’s okay, but probably not something I’ll buy again. If I want coffee like that, I can buy some sugar-free caramel syrup and make it myself.

The group hydro session was great, though. There was only one other person in the class, so maybe that made it easier, and going around the pool doing different exercises at each station seemed more structured, and it felt like more of a workout. I’m a little bummed that I won’t be able to go next week, but that’s the morning I’m having my colonoscopy. Yay, adulting! But I booked in another solo session for earlier in the week, and I’m looking forward to that.

After I got back from picking up the groceries, I had another mandarin. This variety is Afourer, and apparently it’s known to be juicier and more flavourful than the Imperial. I couldn’t do a side-by-side comparison, but it seemed a little bit sweeter than the Imperial I had yesterday. But still not as intense in flavour as I thought it might be. I’ll keep trying.

Lunch

Lunch today was a sandwich. The breast costs me a lot of points, but damn, I really enjoy them. And I don’t know if the carrot sticks are always going to work, but they were good again today. They definitely provide some crunch, but not the saltiness of a good potato chip. I pan-toasted one side of the bread because it was a little stale. That did the trick, and the sandwich was delicious.

TV Snacks

After lunch I went to the shops and picked up a few more grocery items, and did my little walk-around to get 2800 steps in 31 minutes. In the end, not as big as my usual walks, but I’m okay with that since I did the pool session, even though none of my apps count it as exercize. I found myself with a little free time, and decided to catch up on a couple of episodes of Loki. I’m really enjoying that show, and I can’t wait for the series finale next week! I got a little munchy while watching the show, and sliced up an apple. Two servings of fruit, two days in a row. Yay, adulting!

Dinner

Burger night! When I decided to have a sandwich for lunch, I didn’t think about the fact that it was burger night. 10 points for the sandwich plus 9 points for the burger and another 6 points for the chips means I’ll finish the day with 30 points. Still within my daily allowance, but higher than I’ve been going. No regrets, though. The burger was delicious.

My final points tally would’ve been higher, but movie night was cancelled. My wife had to work late, and the kids had forgotten about it and made other plans, so we decided to move it to Saturday night. A bit of a bummer, but I suspect that my body won’t mind turning in early tonight. It’s been a big day.

Because my walk was a little shorter today, and because I ended up flopped on the lounge watching TV for half the afternoon, I finished the day with 8,600 steps. I’m pretty sure I’ll still end up averaging over 10,000 a day, so I’m cool with that. And the same with finishing the day on 30 points. Some days are going to be higher than others, but as long as it averages out, I’m not going to stress about it. Except for the movie night falling through, Friday was A Good Day™. I ate some good food, I drank 3 bottles of water, I got some exercise, I had some fun. I even (sorta) socialized with people, out in the world.

Song of the Day

I read in my morning news catch-up that today is the 10-year anniversary of the final flight of the space shuttle Atlantis, marking the end of the shuttle program. It made me think of this song. I’m never sure if my memories of some of the later Apollo missions are real, or if I’ve seen clips on TV so many times, I just think I remember watching them when I was a little kid. But I know for sure that I remember the shuttle missions. And I was really bummed when they ended the program. And also, Chris Hadfield is an awesome guy. If you’ve never seen his TED talk, I highly recommend it.

Oh, another bonus track today, because while I was watching this video, I also thought about Elton John’s Rocket Man, and specifically the way it was an integral part of the sountrack for the show Californication. I loved that show. Even though it got a bit (okay, a lot) ridiculous at times, I loved the characters, and the wild, messy adventure of Hank and Karen’s relationship.
